Jacques Tourneur’s prototypical Film noir. Great story, but some of its failings bothered me. I found the dialogue to be rough around the edges, perhaps Robert Mitchem doesn’t have the timing. Not the smooth banter I normally expect. On the other hand Kirk Douglas was perfect. The other shortcoming that bothered me, was the film’s reliance on California. It starts in ‘New York” but very quickly the story moves to the west coast. It travels around a lot but never out of California. Very well written and filmed, despite my misgivings.
