An Italian film about a small town near the end of World War Two. The town has connections to resistance fighters and the Fascists want everybody to assemble at the cathedral. A group in the town realize this is a bad idea and flee through the countryside in an attempt to find the American forces. We see what is going on in the mind through flashbacks and episodes of the people as they try to survive in the countryside.
