The film relies on interpretation and uncertainty, events end up as murky as water of the bayou itself. They play out with a sense that the ending is both foretold and up to chance. Memory and visions are relied on to construct what happened in the summer of 1962, when the 10 year title character killed her father. The film presents both a clear story and in the end a mystery, Did things happen differently? And who is to be trusted?
