Not what I was expecting, well sort of. A young boy and his family try to survive in post-war Berlin coming from the wrong side of the war. That is to say the losing side. The films strongest point is the location streets of Berlin, bombed out and ruined. As Edmund tries to survive he goes by seemingly endless rows of crumbling buildings, the streets barely cleared enough for the trolleys to pass. Within this bleak environment we get a far bleaker story, with a climax that is heart wrenching.
