Two peasants are used by a samurai to help transport a princess and her gold across enemy borders. The film focuses more on the peasants, then the samurai and princess, and tells the story from their perspective. The criterion translation was excellent. I’m not sure if there are Japanese equivalents to “This sucks”, “shithead” and “You’re an asshole” but I was pleasantly surprised by the language. A funny, smart film, even with a predictable ending.
