Kurosawa’s Macbeth, with Toshirô Mifune as Washizu (aka Macbeth). Not all that much is different from Shakespeare (or Polanski). Instead of witches it’s a spirit. A cool visual of birds abandoning the forest and flying through the castle was added. And the ending is changed, Washizu is killed by his own men, with no mention of a man not born of women. Oh and the whole thing takes place in Feudal Japan. Lady Washizu seems all the more cold-hearted/crazy in traditional Japanese makeup. Of course it is as captivating and excellent as all of the Kurosawa/Mifune collaborations.
