A director (played by Truffaut) struggles to make a studio film, Meet Pamela. One of the stars is Jean-Pierre Léaud, who plays Antoine Doniel by a different name (or perhaps always plays himself). The standard sort of movie making foibles ensue as things fall apart and finally come together. There is a lovely dream sequence, where a young Truffaut steals still pictures from a theater showing Citizen Kane. Of course the film also opens with a long tracking shot, seemingly a call of prowess in these self-referential films.
