Follows in the German long intense tradition of such films as Das Boot; a meandering film that takes two hours to go anywhere. Not that I disliked it, just the frustration and tedium of Fitzcarraldo was deeply embedded within the structure of the film. So, as the viewer I too was frustrated, bored and tense. When the film actually clear cuts and then drags the boat up a hill, it's pretty intense. The last half hour was great payoff. I only wish the trip didn't take so long.
