What can Charlie Kaufman’s genre be defined as? Mind games? I feel the idea for Eternal Sunshine is an expansion of the trip through Malkovich’s subconscious. Beyond the obvious implications and drama created by having memories erased, we get to romp through the memories of Joel. Gondry seems to reveal in the details of the erasing experience, locations turn into one another, type disappears, streets meet themselves. It’s a nightmare with full consciousness has Joel fights against the inevitable in his own head. An excellent film, not quite on par with the Jonze/Kaufman pairings, but excellent nevertheless.
