Orson Wells is perpetually creepy as a Nazi war criminal hiding in Connecticut. Wells starred and as directed, the mise-en-scene is its usual look and quality. His performance as Charles Rankin is lacking especially if compared to Edward G. Robinson who is terrific. Rankin appears scared, evil and perverted throughout the film. If he touched anything I expected large sweat stains. It was too over the top, how could any other characters doubt he was a Nazi?
