A French criminal masterpiece, a ex-con plans the ultimate heist on a jewelry store in Paris. Watching and reading about it is amazing the film was made at all with its blacklisted director and racist source material. It is fairly conventional until the actual heist. Plans to just break a window and run are abandoned for breaking into the store safe and hauling away 200 million worth of jewels. The film becomes almost absolutely silent for the heist scene. Frustration and impatience are clear when it comes to the arduous task of breaking through the safe. The film surrounding the heist seems inconsequential and almost pedestrian. As long as they can break through in time.
