Ironically enough, Eternal Sunshine is much better then I remembered it. When I first saw it last December, I thought it was good but on the level of Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufmann. The past week I’ve been boning up on Gondry’s work and figuring out his style. What impresses me the most, other then the intense space-shifting and computer graphics, is how all the locations are mediocre. The offices of Lacuna are exactly like every doctor’s office, the Barnes and Noble has the same ugly shelves, even the beach at Montauk, arguably the most important location in the film, is shown in the middle of February under perpetual clouds. There is no glory in these places, Gondry doesn’t make them beautiful. Instead they are presented as they are, to be manipulated, tweaked and dissolved. Genius.
