I went into viewing A Fistful of Dollars as a rip-off of Yojimbo, when current criticism (or actually praise) views it as a revolutionary examination of the Western, ignoring any comparison to Kurosawa’s far superior film. So it’s the film not the story that counts. The problem I have with this view, Is the forty years between me and this movie. I know the references far better then A Fistful of Dollars, hell I know the films it references better too. To me A Fistful of Dollars is just a milepost in a surprisingly obvious lineage.
