As oppose to Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre is a short hour and half. Actually that’s not true, Aguirre is a very long hour and half. Similar to Fitzcarraldo, the pace is slow and meandering. Aguirre doesn’t become the main character until halfway through the film. He then begins his dissent into madness, declaring all he sees the Empire of El Dorado and claiming he has the power of god. Herzog depicts a madman loose in the Amazon and shoves his actors into heat. Most of the suffering in the film looks real, since it presumably is. When Aguirre chases the monkeys its hard to know who’s idea it was; Aguirre’s or Klaus Kinski’s?
