The same amazing visual sense as his past films, but set in a steam punk era. Quite literally, even the trolleys are powered by steam. The story seems lacking, Miyazaki doesn’t explain some key concepts that keep the plot moving. But I was watching for the characters like Calcifer, the fire demon or Madam Suliman’s old spy dog. Reading other reviews it seems wise that we watched the subtitled version. The original Japanese voices are excellent, especially the actress voicing old Sophie. She sighs and groans in little almost indecipherable ways that absolutely conveys her age. A very entertaining film, even if it’s not up to Miyazkui’s past achievements.
