Apparently Women and Men are equal, despite the traditions of the Maoris. Pai is the only living descendant of her tribe’s long line of Chiefs. Her mother and twin brother both die at childbirth, and her father was ruled unfit by her Grandfather long ago. Pai is more then up to the task of becoming chief, except for her Grandfather’s steadfast ways (and he’s a big prick). The film is predictable, but entertaining, mostly for its respect in the depiction of Maori culture. Also the whale riding is surprisingly realistic.
