It’s formulaic, but it’s also based on an amusement park ride. Could I really complain? Yes I could, but I won’t. Johnny Depp is fantastic as always, with his rock star, devil-may-care pirate, swashbuckling around tropical locals stealing ships from other pirates and the British navy. It is surprising how much story gets squeezed out of the ride, which from what I remember shows a fairly typical ransacking of a colonial town. The film ends up as fun as the inspiration, mostly due to Depp.
