Fairly conventional in style, if not annoyingly so (I understood the message long before the first jazzy love song ended and then the next one began). What really sets this film apart is the amazing performance by both Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue. Cage is extremely convincing as an alcoholic with a death wish. His soft simplistic voice, the shakes and the occasional violent outburst, is incredibly convincing. The film floats around his acting. Also its very depressing, the kind of depression normally reserved for Heroin films.
