I was surprised at how well written 40 Year Old Virgin was. It not only avoids clichés well, but the film seemed to head straight for them before veering just in time. It allows the characters to be both grotesquely funny and human, vicious arguments in the electronics store end with friendly exchanges. The only major criticism is that the unrated version was far too long: it should have ended at the beginning of the third quarter. Very impressive for what looked like it would be a Farrelly brothers type movie.
