By far the Coen Brother's most beautiful film, the tones are incredibly rich, the lights are magnificent. Like all of their films elements are used repeatedly, what struck me was how many layers repeated themselves. The dialogue has it's standard repetition, but the cinematography also recycles itself. For instance the executioner shaves Ed's leg almost exactly as Ed shaved Dorise's. Or the execution witnesses' haircuts, match those of the boys waiting for Jacques Carcanogues. The film is full of so many layers, yet it's presented so deadpan, so straight that it feels authentically from the 1950s. After all he is the Barber, for Christsake. The Modern Man.
