A beautifully crafted, rivetingly acted, disturbing character study. The depiction of the time period (1898-1927) was fascinating, wooden derricks cobbled together with scrap wood against sparse frontier hillsides. Only 100 miles (and 30 years?) from modern civilization. A civilization I could live in. The film solidifies that Daniel Day-Lewis is from history, he is Daniel Plainview in all his nuanced rage and impeccable varnish. Oil-mad and combative, Plainview is malicious even when victorious.
