Ratatouille is at it's best in the kitchen, and reverts to generic kids cinema outside of it. It's inconsistent, with a great deal of care and attention lavished on the visuals, the workings of the kitchen, and visual metaphors for taste. Tacked on is the rat family and the very lousy narration. It's also surprisingly violent.
