A violent Lord of the Flies as sponsored by the government and given a deadline. The violence in Battle Royale amplifies the teenage cliques, hierarchies and awkward emotions. The film is both detached (there are 40 students that need to die) and engaged in the kids and their motivations. Overall it was fairly smart and not as brutal as the premise seems.
