The Prestige is about obsession and the rivalry created by it, a rivalry which has no limits. One man is driven to barbarous ends in his attempt at one-upsmanship, While the other has taken the performance to extremes that deny him a full life. What is disappointing about a film is how the plot discards it magic and subtly, and ensures it is obvious at the end.
