Elephant is the very straight story of the moments before a school shooting. It's impressive in it's banality, the pedestrian, boring day of a high school. The school is sprawling allowing the camera to be extremely fluid as it floats through the corridors on long one take shots. Of course the day is punctuated by extreme violence. And Gus Van Sant doesn't offer any explanation, answer, or analysis of that violence. Not that I was expecting one. Elephant far exceeded my expectations for an open-ended, unstructured film. The film is what it is, it's just what you see.
