Based on his previous documentary, Herzog fictionalizes Deiter Dengler's escape from a Laotian prisoner-of-war camp. It is more conventional then Fitzcarraldo or Aguirre, but shares many of the themes of his past fictional work. Christian Bale's Dengler is as courageous and crazed as Herzog's previous characters, but grounded in the horrors of the Vietnam War and of course the documentary. That realism gives the film it's emotional depth and sustains it's appeal.
