The beginning of the Salton Sea is particularly bad. With the development of Val Kilmer's character it gets more interesting, almost redeeming itself in the last half hour. A high point is Vincent D'Onofrio's plastic nosed "Pooh-bear". But it's never really that good. The supposed comedic scenes are flat, the action is predictable, the drug-use contrived and the mystery tame. Overall It's too many pieces not fitting into a dull picture.
