Bound For Glory starts in a listless Texas town, Woody Guthrie avoiding dust storms and demeaning work. Soon he skips out on his family heading to California via freight trains and hitch hiking. The film proceeds at a slow but steady pace. Pretty soon Guthrie is discovered, tries being family man again and then skips town. David Carradine portrays Guthrie with cloyingly sweet personality, but stubborn and arrogant. The film is nuanced enough depict sympathetic story, but still have Guthrie come off as a son of a bitch. And it notably avoids feeling like common biography.
