Avatar is a visual wonderland, trapped in a mediocre film. The plot is formulaic, the dialogue trite, the acting wooden. At times I was so frustrated by the predictability, could not keep still in my seat. Cameron beats the audience over the head, not missing an opportunity to dumb it down some more. It would have been horrible to watch on DVD. However on a 65-foot-high IMAX screen in 3D, with the light levels optimized for this theater, it was amazing to watch. Pandora is such a luscious, embellished, veracious world, the spectacle almost redeems the storytelling.
