Josey Wales is in many ways an archetypal Clint Eastwood character. And at times Eastwood plays him far to close to the archetype. The film moves along and entertains the most during the grand chase. Wales outwits his pursuers and picks up a gang of misfits along the way. Then it slows down and becomes listless when he settles down with them all in Texas. It leaves a lot out. The gang of misfits motivations are hard to know. And no reason is ever given for the Jayhawkers killing his Wife and Son. Ultimately it wasn't terribly entertaining, exciting or good.
