It's wonderful, full of black humor, gratuitous violence and great performances. Jeff Bridges personifies Rooster Cogburn as a real ornery gunslinger, as opposed to John Wayne playing John "Rooster" Wayne. Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross is so great there is no comparison to the 1969 film. Roger Deakins masters capturing the beauty of Oklahoma. It's a fantastic western and less a “Coen Brothers film”. That's my slight trouble with it. I wanted to fall in love with it. I wanted to be enthralled and bewitched and leave the theater in a daze. And I didn't.
