A laconic hobo A no. 1 battles with the sadistic, volatile railroad conductor Shack for the pride of riding the local #19. Emperor of the North is a take no-prisoners, son-of-a-bitch of a film. With all the swagger and grit from a wartime prison break placed on a freight train. The spare story is distilled to it's basic elements and then greased with testosterone. Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin are at their best and kicking ass. A hard, sarcastic, hobo action thriller on a depression-era freight train, what not for me to love?
