The film, and really the whole franchise, depend completely on Johnny Depp's characterization of Jack Sparrow. Which is delightful. There are nice homages to the original Disneyland ride, but they never overshadow the original story. The production is complete blockbuster chic, drenched in orange and cyan. But Johnny Depp is so good, that the film succeeds entirely on his performance.
