Challenging and enthralling. Joaquin Phoenix in particular is mesmerizing as an alcoholic, deadbeat hothead. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance as Lancaster Dodd is equally great. Though Phoenix remains riveting throughout, completely embodying his enigmatic character.
